what Birth Trauma feels like
Still Affected by Your Birth Experience? You Are Not Alone.
Birth trauma does not always look the way people expect. You do not have to have had a near-death experience or a surgical emergency to have been traumatized by birth. A birth experience can be traumatic because of what happened medically, because of how you were treated, because things did not go the way you planned, because you felt out of control or unheard, or because something happened to your baby.
Signs you may be experiencing birth trauma:
Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or vivid replays of the birth
Nightmares or difficulty sleeping connected to the experience
Avoiding hospitals, appointments, or conversations about the birth
Feeling detached, numb, or disconnected since it happened
Anxiety or panic that feels tied to what you went through
Difficulty bonding with your baby or enjoying early parenthood
Anger, grief, or a sense that something was taken from you
Fear about future pregnancies or returning to medical care
Feeling like no one around you understands
Understanding What You’re Experiencing
Birth trauma occurs when the experience of labor, delivery, or the immediate postpartum period is perceived as frightening, overwhelming, or out of control. It can result from an emergency situation, a complicated delivery, unexpected medical interventions, a NICU stay, feeling dismissed or unheard by care providers, or simply from birth not going anything like you expected. When birth trauma is part of the picture, postpartum PTSD can develop, with symptoms that often mirror those of PTSD in other contexts, including intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, emotional numbing, and avoidance. Many women are never told that what they’re experiencing has a name, or that it is treatable.
Birth trauma also affects partners and non-birthing parents. Witnessing a difficult or frightening birth can be its own traumatic experience, and that deserves attention too.
If you’re not sure which of these describes what you’re going through, that’s okay! You don’t need to arrive with a diagnosis.
You just need to reach out.

Why Specialized Care for Birth Trauma Matters
Birth trauma responds best to care from providers who understand the clinical landscape of the perinatal period. This means knowing which symptoms point to what, knowing the questions to ask, and knowing the difference between a normal adjustment response and something that needs more focused attention.
At Monarch Counseling, every provider works exclusively in perinatal mental health. Our team is either certified through Postpartum Support International or actively pursuing that certification. We also offer EMDR therapy for clients whose postpartum experience is connected to birth trauma, prior loss, or unresolved experiences that have resurfaced.
This level of specialization means the work moves faster and goes deeper. We recognize what others sometimes miss. We know how to help.
How we Help
Birth Trauma Therapy at Monarch Counseling
Monarch Counseling offers specialized birth trauma therapy for women and families across Florida. Our providers are trained in perinatal mental health through Postpartum Support International and understand the specific clinical landscape of birth trauma, including how it intersects with postpartum depression, anxiety, and grief.
We offer EMDR therapy, which is one of the most effective evidence-based approaches for processing traumatic experiences. EMDR works by helping your nervous system reprocess what happened so that the memory no longer carries the same emotional charge. You do not have to relive the experience in detail for it to work. Many clients find that it helps them move through what they have been stuck on in a way that traditional talk therapy alone has not been able to reach.
Our approach is paced to where you are. There is no pressure to move faster than feels right, and you are never pushed to revisit something before you are ready.
